Thanks to a $1,000 grant from the Westport Arts Council, the halls of Rideau Vista Public School were recently alive with the vibrant rhythms of West Africa!
Through the incredible MASC program, the school welcomed Fana Soro — a master musician and dancer from the Ivory Coast — for a high-energy, interactive performance that had students clapping, dancing, and drumming along! Fana brought his ancestral music to life, sharing the stories and sounds of West Africa through traditional instruments like the balafon (a wooden xylophone) and hand-carved drums.
WAC member Sue Todd and our board secretary Jeannette Kenny had the joy of joining the students during the performance — and judging by the smiles and laughter, the experience hit all the right notes!
Thank you to the staff at Rideau Vista for embracing this opportunity, and to the students for showing us all how powerful — and joyful — cultural exchange can be.
